Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park - Nepal

Located 12 kilometers from the capital city, Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park (159 square kilometers) is the country’s ninth national park. Originally, it was managed by the Shivapuri Watershed Development Board, and later it was designated Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve. It is situated on the northern edge of the valley.

Major Attractions of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park

The park has a number of features that make it an ideal destination for visitors, including scenic views, biodiversity, forest environments, wildernesses, avifauna, spiritual fitness, religious sites, trekking and hiking, as well as opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in other cultures.

A Hindu and a Buddhist both revere Shivapuri peak, which is the source of the rivers Bagmati and Bishnumati. In addition to Bagdwar, Bishnudwar, Jamacho, and Buddha Gupha, there are many important pilgrimage destinations in the SNNP that provide opportunities for hiking, spiritual fitness, and wilderness recreation, as well as important pilgrimage destinations like Manichur Mahadev, Kageshwori, Sundarimai, Baudeshwor, Tarkeshowr, Pachali Bhairav, and Nagi Gumba.

It is possible to hike Shivapuri Peak, see a snowy panorama of other Himalayas, and visit Nagi gumba through several tour and trekking operators in Kathmandu. As well as birdwatching, jungle walks, cycling, hiking, and trekking, the park offers a range of other activities.

Flora and Fauna

Shivapuri lies between subtropical and temperate climates. The natural forest types in Shivapuri differ according to altitude and aspect, including pines, oaks, and rhododendrons. A number of mammals have been documented in the park, including Himalayan Black bears, leopards, jungle cats, and rhesus monkeys.

Additionally, there are 177 bird species in the park, including nine threatened species, 102 butterfly species and 129 mushroom species.

Water Resources

Water for Kathmandu Valley is tapped from Shivapuri, one of the main sources of drinking water. Bagmati, Bishnumati, and several other smaller streams supply Shivapuri with water daily.

Places of Interest

The park is also home to several religious sites for Hindus and Buddhists, as well as trekking routes that link Nagarkot, Gosaikunda, Helambu, and Langtang National Parks.

In mid-April, Nepalese New Year, when the sacred rivers Bagmati and Bishnumatii originate in the park, pilgrims from Kathmandu and surrounding areas go to Baghdwar and Bishnudwar. The northern slopes of the park provide magnificent views of the high Himalayas. On the other hand, the southern slopes of the park offer an impressive view of the Kathmandu valley.

In the buffer zone, there are few hotels/lodges and a 130 km stone wall around the park. The park is surrounded by a 95 km gravelled road and 83 km walking trails built for trekking.

At different entrance gates, nature guides are available who are trained and experienced.

  • Entering into the park shall be one’s own responsibility. Park does not compensate for deaths, injuries, losses, and/or damages to the visitor and their belongings.
  • Do not travel lonely.
  • Each tourist must pay respective entry fees to get permission to enter into the park and to conduct adventure activities.
  • Do not purchase wild animal, plants and their products.
  •  Rubbish must be packed, buried or disposed of in the designated areas.
  • All faunas and floras are completely protected, so must not carry or distribute.
  •  Vehicles need not blow horns inside the park. Picnic spots are free of loud speakers.
  • Firing inside the park is prohibited thus campers and picnic groups must burn alternative energy sources.
  • Respect local culture and do not pollute holy sites.
  • Travelling is allowed only from sunrise to sunset.
